In an eye-catching matchup of baseball greats, Gyeongnam Go swept Cheonan Bukil Go 12-2 in five innings with a cold game to advance to the round of 16. In the round of 32 game at Mokdong Baseball Stadium in Seoul on the 31st, Kyungnam attacked the North Ilgo mound from the beginning with 10 long and short hits.

North Korea rallied with three straight hits in the bottom of the third inning to cut the deficit to 2-9, but it wasn’t enough. Gyeongnam made it 10-2 with a run in the top of the fourth, then added a run in the top of the fifth on one hit and four wild pitches to make it 12-2 and set up the conditions for a 10-run fifth inning.

North Korea’s pitching staff self-destructed as they allowed 12 hits and four walks. Gyeongnam, on the other hand, effectively shut down the North Korean bats as Kim Woo-hyuk pitched four innings of two-run ball and Kwon Jin-hyuk followed with a scoreless inning. The two pitchers combined for three strikeouts in the fourth inning, a contrast to the North Korean pitching staff.

After advancing to the round of 16, Gyeongnam Go will face local rival and last year’s phoenix tournament winner Busan Go at Mokdong Baseball Stadium in Seoul on September 3 at 11:30 a.m. for a spot in the quarterfinals.
