The Bavarians defeated Werder Bremen 4-0 at the Weserstadion in Bremen, Germany, on Monday (Sept. 19) in the first round of the 2023-2024 German Bundesliga. Leroy Sane scored twice and Kane and Mathis Thiel each netted once in the rout.

Kane made a huge impact on his Bundesliga debut. He set up Zane’s opener with a neat one-touch penetrating pass just four minutes into the game. In the 30th minute, he wasted no time in getting on the end of a pass from Alfonso Davies and slotting home his debut goal. He became the second Englishman to score on his Bundesliga debut, joining Reece Nelson (Hoffenheim) in 2018.

It was a performance that solved Bayern’s striker woes. Kane held up the front for 84 minutes, linking up with his teammates and creating space by drawing down the opposition defense with timely runs. One such example was in the 40th minute, when he got inside the penalty box and drew the defense back to create space for Jamal Moussaoui to shoot.

Even his defensive involvement was good. Kane did his part to keep Bremen’s attack at bay in the first place by pressing forward. In first-half stoppage time, he even headed away an opponent’s free-kick opportunity.

Speaking after his successful debut, Kane said: “It was a difficult game, but we scored early and started the game well. Bremen had a few chances too, so the second goal was even more important. I was a bit nervous before the game, but luckily I was able to play a good game.”

Tuchel was also full of praise for Kane. “Good is not enough,” he told the post-match press conference. Kane was very good. Humanly, his presence on the pitch, the way he trained, everything was great. He got an assist right from the start and scored his debut goal. I think he can keep doing what he’s doing,” he said, giving Kane a thumbs-up.

Tuchel was also pleased with the team’s overall performance. “We played a very solid game from start to finish,” said Tuchel. We made some mistakes in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but we overcame them as a team. I was especially happy to keep a clean sheet and take control of the game. It was a good first step,” he said of the opening match.
