Incheon United defeated Daegu FC 3-1 in the 26th round of the Hana One Q K League 1 2023 at the Incheon Football Stadium at 7.30pm on 13 November. With the win, Incheon leapfrogged into seventh place with nine wins, nine draws and eight defeats (36 points) and completed a three-game home winning streak following a 1-0 victory over Gangwon FC and a 2-0 win over Daejeon Hana Citizen.

It was a cool win. Three goals in the first half made it easy. In the 23rd minute, Mugosa rattled the net with a powerful shot after receiving a pass from Jerso inside the penalty box. Then, in the 32nd minute, Lee Myung-joo sent in a corner kick, and Moon Ji-hwan rushed forward to take a header. The ball hit Hong Chul’s body and was sucked into the goal. Finally, in the first minute of first-half stoppage time, after receiving a penetrating pass from Mugosa, Jerso sprinted forward and scored with a calm finish. Despite conceding a penalty kick (PK) to Sejingya in the last minute of the second half, the three points remained unchanged.

The 26th round result puts Incheon within sight of a top-four finish in the league. They are currently in seventh place, but only two points separate them from fourth-placed FC Seoul (38 points). Depending on the results of their upcoming fixtures, they can look up.

The team has three important matches coming up. Incheon hosts Gwangju FC in the league on the 18th, followed by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Champions League (ACL) Playoffs (PO) against the winner of Hong Kong Rangers (Hong Kong) vs Hai Phong FC (Vietnam) on the 22nd. We then host Suwon FC in the league on the 25th.

While the games against Gwangju and Suwon are important, the focus is on the ACL PO. Incheon finished fourth in the K League 1 last season and earned a ticket to the PO based on their FA Cup result. It was a huge achievement for the club, as it was their first ever appearance in the competition.

No K League team has ever been eliminated from the ACL playoffs before. Incheon will need to analyse their opponents in order to avoid such a fate and advance to the main stage. For now, they need to pay close attention to the Hong Kong Rangers and Hai Phong on the 15th at 8.30pm (KST).

Coach Cho Sung-hwan plans to prepare more thoroughly. Instead of analysing the video, he will watch the game with his own two eyes. “I will go to the local game on the 15th with an analyst coach to analyse it,” he said at the press conference after the match against Daegu. According to Incheon officials, they plan to move on with one coach and one power analyst. In addition, coach Cho Sung-hwan explained in Mixzone that he has scheduled a two-day, three-night trip, leaving the country on the 14th and returning at dawn on the 16th.

The match between the Hong Kong Rangers and Hai Phong will be held in Hong Kong. With this trip, Incheon will be able to analyse with quality data.
