[Spotlight] ‘From Ronaldo to Benzema to Kante’: Why Saudi Arabia has become a destination for European stars

The Saudi league has changed from being just another Asian soccer league. The league has become so popular that superstars are choosing Saudi Arabia as their first destination.

Much of this is due to the Saudi Vision 2030 project. The Saudis want to reduce the country’s dependence on oil by 2030 and create an economy in many different places, one of which is soccer.

To that end, Al Hilal, Al Nasr, Al Ittihad, and Al Ahli have invested heavily. The Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, which is also the owner of Newcastle United, nationalized these four teams. This has allowed the four teams to attract European stars.

Al Hilal is the most decorated team in the Saudi League (18 titles) and the most decorated team in the ACL (4 titles). This summer, they signed Kalidou Koulibaly, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, and Rubin Neves.

Al Ittihad is another big name. They bolstered their ranks this summer with the signings of Benzema, Kante, and Fabinho.

Al Nasr is known as Ronaldo’s team, bringing in Sadio Mane and Marcelo Brozovic.

With more interest than ever, the Saudi league will kick off on August 12. Starting this season, there will be 18 teams in total, playing 34 games per team on a home-and-away basis.
